Weimaraner Bleu

Owl Feather Farm, San Juan Island

Blue knew his name the first time he heard it.

Our little Weimaraner puppy poked his head out of the travel crate at SeaTac airport last September, after his long trip from Montana, and gave a kiss to his new family. He was 9 weeks old—a baby. But he knew exactly who he was, who we were, where we were going and why.

Nicole is sure that Bleu (she uses the French spelling) manifested his entry to this world and his journey to Owl Feather Farm. He’d first been promised to a family in Canada, but border closures blocked that, so he came west to our island instead.

“It was meant to be” is a common human refrain, but most people don’t truly believe there are metaphysical forces in this universe not yet quantified in physics. At least, that’s the “civilized” view. Most indigenous peoples believe that everything in the universe—everything—has its own spirit to be acknowledged and respected. Every tree, every stone, every bird, every piece of sand.

Blue’s spirit emanates love and joy. As with most dogs, every morning is Christmas. Everyone who comes to our farm is a new friend. Every walk around the hay meadow is a new adventure; every rustle in the woods an elven footfall. Every morsel of food is the best ever. Every hug and kiss a brand new medicine.

Morsels of attention!

Love and joy are powerful healing forces, and they manifest themselves in the fact that all beings seek connection. The compact that people and canines made 10,000 years ago is simple: unconditional faith and love. The same for cats and horses, and donkeys and yes, even chickens. Our animals here at Owl Feather Farm—both “wild” and “domestic”—help us face a complex world. They shepherd our spirits; we shepherd their oats and kibble.

But food isn’t the foundation. It’s attention. That’s what love and faith look like every day. Does Bleu want a treat at the dinner table? Sure. The real treat isn’t calories, it’s transmission of love.

Blue is almost full-grown now. His specialties are charging across the hay meadow at 30mph, full-body hugs, and snoozing upside down on the couch. We hope the healing spirits in your life are beside you now. Please feel free to come meet ours as well, because everyone is a potential new friend.
